It is nice to have an idea of what you need for a given destination. The following are list for basic essentials as well as some packing list ideas for a variety of destinations. These are simply some ideas to get you started. You can take the lists and add additional items or create even more specific list.

Basic Packing

Here you will have a basic list of items that you will be standard with your other entire list that you will read more about below. These are items that are considered regular.

  • Sunglasses are great for any destination, especially those with UV protection to keep harmful rays out of your eyes.  Sunglasses are also great for wintery locations as they help keep the snow glare out of your eyes keeping you from a serious headache because of constant squinting.
  • Passports, credit cards and additional IDs
  • Reading glasses
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Floss
  • Makeup (unless you do not use any)
  • Hygiene items
  • Deodorant
  • Camera
  • Cell Phone
  • Laptop/Tablet
  • Casual clothes – up to five sets, more if it is practical

Items to Buy Along the Way

  • Detergent
  • Shampoo – as it does tend to spill. You may need to pack your own should you need a specialty shampoo that you may not find at your destination.
  • Maps – unless you can preorder them
  • Umbrella – only if you need it. Even in some of the most rainy places you may be able to wait out the heavy part of the rain or a rain coat is sufficient.

Wintery Destination

  • Coat but it is best if you wear it so that you will not have to dig your luggage for it. In addition, a coat can certainly take a lot of space in your luggage so wearing it will give you more room in your suitcase.
  • Scarf
  • Warm socks that are made of wool or other material that is excellent in winter climates. You want to avoid cotton socks as they are not the best for winter weather.
  • Jeans
  • Shoes – wear one pair and pack an extra.
  • Boots
  • Gloves – again think of buying ones that have material that will keep your hands warm.  Depending on how deep the cold, you may need some thermo gloves.

Desert Rendezvous

  • Scarf to cover face in case of dust storm. Places such as Moab, Utah at Arches National Park can have a unsuspecting sand storm and it is nice to be prepared.
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Tent if you are planning to stay at campsites
  • Water bottles – you can fill or purchase plenty of water so that you can have an adequate amount of water

Jungle Attire and More

  • Flip flops
  • Shower shoes as jungle environments tend to breeding grounds for easily acquiring some unknown fungus or athlete’s foot.
  • Boots
  • Raincoat and/or umbrella
  • Sunscreen
  • Light jacket – some jungle areas can be chilly especially in mountainous regions.
  • Swim wear
  • Hiking shoes
  • Clothing that dries easily as some jungle areas are rainy and only allow for a short window of time during the day for your clothes to dry.

In addition you may want to add a nice dress should you plan a dinner date along your ventures,  and definitely something to pack on a European vacation where you may want to visit some sophisticated sites.

Again the packing list are here to give you some ideas on what you will need on your next travel gal’s destination.
